2nd February 2022
The Riverland is a place where time stands still and life becomes all about relaxing and having fun in the sun. Let the banks of the beautiful Murray River become the setting for your Weekend Escape this summer. Pick from these towns in the Riverland and start planning a well-deserved getaway!
The Riverland has so much to offer for a holiday with its wonderful seasonal Mediterranean climate, stunning conservation parks and every river-based outdoor activity that one can possibly imagine. So why not treat the family to a break this year and visit some of the lovely towns in the Riverland region. Prepare to be totally charmed.
Bustling Berri
One of the larger towns is Berri. This charming place takes its name from the local Aboriginal tribe ‘bery bery’ meaning ‘bend in the river’. Berri is surrounded by 3000 hectares of irrigated orchards and vineyards hence it is home to some of the largest and oldest wineries in Australia. So, a visit to the one of the winning winemakers cellar doors is a must.
Choose Berri as your base and book into the Big River Golf and Country Club. Situated next to the wonderful 18-hole golf course. With spacious and comfortable rooms overlooking the course, an outdoor pool and spa and an excellent restaurant all onsite, it ticks all the boxes for a getaway. The Tavern Restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner but be sure to book as it is popular with the locals too.
Sunny Waikerie
Known as the sunniest town in South Australia it will come as no surprise that Waikerie is the fruit capital of the region. It is the perfect place to taste local produce including stone fruit, tasty preserves and rich olive oil, all grown in this idyllic climate.
If bird watching is also your thing, then Waikerie is certainly the place to visit. Based on the South bank of the Murray River this quaint and more peaceful town boasts stunning river bank views where one can sit and appreciate the wonderful array of birdlife either on land or from the roof top of your very own a house boat.
Historical Morgan
Morgan is one of the more interesting towns in the Riverland due to its history. In the 1800’s Morgan was home to hundreds of paddle steamers which carried people and cargo up and down the great Murray River. However, it is also a great spot for fishing. A great variety of other water sports occur here, plus it has huge river front lawns on which to relax and while away the hours.
Colonial Loxton
This is the town to visit if you have the family in tow, as it hosts an impressive historic village from the colonial times. Wander along and see old shop fronts with people outside in traditional colonial costume. The kids can even be enthralled by watching live sheep shearing. A trip to Loxton makes for a fascinating experience for the kids, who can see just how things have changed over time.
Fun-filled Monash
Boasting one of the most popular attractions in the Riverland, Monash is a must for families. The Monash Adventure Park has an abundance of activities including a giant maze, leaning climbing towers, a rope bridge, basketball courts and just about every other kind of playground equipment imaginable. Picnic areas and BBQ sites all provide seating for weary parents while the kids play to their hearts content. Finally, the chocolate factory just opposite will definitely tempt them away from the park and is well worth the visit.
Impressive Renmark
Finally, the last town that you will come across whilst driving through the Riverland to Victoria is Renmark, renowned for its abundant birdlife and excellent distillery. Discover the breathtaking ochre-coloured clifftops while meandering along the majestic Murray River then visit the wetlands where you can spot an abundance of Australian birdlife. Food and drink lovers will also love visiting the famous Twenty Third Street Distillery where it is imperative to check out the cellar door to try one of the state’s most popular gins or spirits. While here, why not enjoy a tasty meal to complete the wonderfully relaxing afternoon?
