Weekends by the river
In the hot summer weather, the Riverland is more beautiful than ever. The glistening water of the river, the many wineries and the flourishing wildlife make a summer trip to this unique region of South Australia very enticing! This summer 2021, consider a weekend escape spend by the Murray. Only a couple of hours away from Adelaide, it couldn’t be easier. In this article, we have pulled together the things to do in the Riverland in Summer, to make your trip to the meandering Murray fun for the whole family.
Things to do in the Riverland in Summer:
Swim in the Lake Bonney
Out of all the things to do in the Riverland in Summer, this is definitely the most refreshing. Popular amongst local families and those visiting the region, Lake Bonney in Barmera is the perfect spot to wind down (and cool down). The kids will love it here too. With jetties to jump off and a soft sandy floor, Lake Bonney is very child-friendly. Grab a sheltered spot for lunch, use one of the BBQs and spend a relaxing day by the lake! Fancy an ice cream? There are plenty of shops nearby where you can grab a treat!
Play golf in Berri
At Big River Golf & Country Club, you and your partner, friends – or whoever you’re travelling with – can enjoy a round of golf. With an easy walking layout, small hills, bumps and bunkers, this golf course in the Riverland is not only a great for the sport, but it’s also very picturesque! Flowering gums, Mallee trees and stretching fairways will see you all the way from the 1st to 18th hole.
Enjoy the Riverland by canoe
Canoeing is naturally one of the best things to do in the Riverland in Summer. The slow flowing water of the Murray River, the beautiful wildlife and orange cliffs make for ideal conditions for all kinds of groups. Plus, there is a vast network of wetlands and waterways which cut through national parks and beautiful landscapes. Pick Canoe Adventures and embark on a sunset tour, or simply hire a kayak and enjoy some time on the water. Remember, wear a hat and slather on the sun screen!
Walk along the Murray River
If you’ve been to the Riverland before, you’ve likely been for a walk. The incredible riverbanks and abundance of wildlife make for top notch hiking experiences. But have you ever considered a walking tour? With Murray River Trails, you can book guided walks and houseboat experiences to match your ability and interests. As you go, fall in love with the Murray River and immerse yourself in ancient landscapes rich in Aboriginal culture.
Take the kids to one of the Riverland’s many playgrounds
The Riverland has a great selection of playgrounds for children. Monash not only has a playground but mini basketball, free electric barbecues and picnic facilities as well as a paddleboat kiosk. Meanwhile, overlooking Lake Bonney, Barmera “play space” has plenty of imaginative play equipment to keep the children (and also adults) entertained for hours on end! If this is a weekend getaway about the whole family, a trip to one of the Riverland’s playgrounds is a must to drain the energy out of the smaller members!
Visit a Riverland winery that can entertain you all day
One of the best wineries in the Riverland – for its sheer number of things to do and see – is Banrock Station. Known not only for its wine but also dedication to biodiversity and the protection of the environment, the best thing about this Riverland winery is that you the whole family can spend hours here. Start with a walk around the grounds and wetlands. Spot birds from hideouts and follow the boardwalks and trails. Short options, but also those up to 8km are available for all kinds of groups. Once you’re done, try a wine tasting with views over the quintessential Riverland landscape. Then, before you go grab some lunch on the terrace from a beautiful, locally sourced menu. On your way out, there are plenty of items for sale; not only wine but local treats.
Visit Woolshed Brewery
Perfectly positioned next to the water, Woolshed Brewery is a perfect location to while away a summer afternoon. The brewery is set in an 100 year old wool shed at Wilkadene Station, which was once a shriving sheep and wheat station. Today, this place screams craft brewery! Try the venue’s award winning ales as well as their Hard Lemonade and Pink Lemonade. For non-drinkers, a great selection of juices, teas and coffees are also available. This spot might not offer hot or cooked food but there’s plenty to nibble on! Opt for a ‘Create your own platter’ comprised of delicious, locally made goods, or use the onsite BBQ.
