Beautiful scenery surrounding the majestic Murray River and all the activities the area offers, make it the perfect destination for a Riverland getaway. A Riverland getaway to remember
The Riverland is home to a some adorable country towns, with Berri, Renmark, Loxton and Monash being among the largest. Meanwhile, the region’s stunning red-burnt river banks slices through nature here, making it an iconic getaway destination among South Australians and across the world. The Riverland is a place where time simply stands still.
With the River Murray at its soul, it comes as no surprise that a lot of the activities here are water based. However, if water sports are not your thing, then there are numerous other fun things to do. From walking trails to cycling, bird watching and picnicking, families and friend groups alike don’t run out of things to do here.
The Riverland is also lovingly known as the fruit bowl of South Australia, because of the vast range of locally produced fruit, wine and other foods that are produced here. Ideas for your Riverland getaway
Head to the river
Why not start the morning off with some fun on the river? The Riverland is home to many creeks, backwaters and wonderful lagoons which are best discovered in a kayak. So pack up a picnic, hire some kayaks and find yourself weaving through the narrow wetlands of this stunning region. Look out for kangaroos, emus, koalas and an abundance of birdlife and simply enjoy the peace and tranquility. For the serious birdwatchers, there is no better place to spot birdlife while being spoilt by the delightful birdsong which fills the air.
Visit the wineries
Berri is surrounded by some of the largest wine producers in South Australia. Alongside these are some smaller boutique type wineries. You’re encouraged to visit at least one during your trip! 919 Wines is a popular destination because it offers guests an authentic cellar door experience within the workings of the winery. So spend the afternoon tasting some of the award winning wines and chatting to the winemakers, to learn about the whole production process. With beautiful scenery thrown in, what better way to spend an afternoon?
Savour a local dinner
Berri is home to some wonderful restaurants in which to indulge in a good hearty meal at end of a long day. For a romantic setting nestled within eleven acres of bushland, head to the themed The Mallee Fowl Restaurant where you will be treated to locally produced Australian cuisine set within a local and relaxed atmosphere. It’s the perfect setting to end the first day of your Riverland getaway.
Spend some time with nature
After a restful night’s sleep, take a short drive out to the Murray River National Park and spend the morning immersed in nature. Be amazed by the rich red banks either side of the majestic Murray river which meanders through the wetlands and floodplains. Take a hike along the banks and embrace the flora and fauna along the way. There are long hikes or shorter walks depending on each person’s preference. It’s the perfect way to escape the cares and worries of life and be at one with nature.
Take a boat trip
When your legs are feeling weary from the morning hike, treat yourselves to a boat trip along the river. This way you will get to see the mighty river from a different perspective. The ‘Missy’ offers short boat trips whereby you can sit back with a drink and enjoy the quintessentially Australian scenery as you glide by. Every twist and turn of the river provides a different view.
Catch the sunset
Finally it’s time to wind down from the day by watching the most spectacular sunset you will probably ever see. As the sun sets, it catches the rich red earth and the limestone towering ‘curtains’ of the cliffs, to give a spectacular image that you wont forget in a hurry. The peace and tranquility is only disturbed by the wonderful sound of the local birdlife. It really is a sight to behold and is the perfect way to finish a perfect Riverland getaway.
