Okay Read More24 hours in Victor Harbor
8th June 2018
Victor Harbor is so much more than its sun, sea and surf glory. Whether you’re staying for a night or longer, here’s a few things not to miss during your visit to Victor Harbor.
Horse Drawn Tram to Granite Island
Take a ride on the only horse-drawn tramway in Australia over to Victor Harbor’s iconic Granite Island. Magnificent Clydesdale horses draw you along the 630-metre causeway from seaside Victor Harbor to Granite Island, home to the magical little fairy penguins and often visited by sea lions and southern right whales.
Follow the path around the huge granite boulders tinged with orange lichen, with the sound of waves crashing against the rocky shore. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a southern right whale between May and October.
Cockle train
The Cockle Train travels along the oldest steel railed railway in Australia dating back to 1887 when it was constructed to provide a link between the River Murray and the ocean wharfs at Port Elliot and later at Victor Harbor.
Why is this iconic journey called the ‘Cockle Train’? Because in the early days of settlement the local residents would take the horse drawn train to Goolwa to collect cockles from the sandy beaches. Today, the Cockle Train experience takes riders on a 30-minute journey from town to town offering some of the most picturesque coastal scenery on the Fleurieu Peninsula with uninterrupted views of the Southern Ocean.
Jump into the in-sea aquarium with Oceanic Victor and feel the adrenaline rush as their resident Southern Bluefin Tuna sweep past you at up to 70km/h!
A quick trip aboard their luxurious catamaran, Oceanic Victor will take you out to the in-sea aquarium where you’ll be fitted with a wetsuit, booties and gloves before jumping into the pen and swimming among hundreds of marvellous sea creatures. If you’d rather stay dry, you can still feed the tuna from the viewing deck or experience smaller species at the touch tank. Or settle in and watch on from the underwater observatory and enjoy the spectacular view of Australia’s marine life shimmy by.
For those wanting to explore the world beneath the waves, Oceanic Victor offers a 1 hour and 45-minute fun and educational experience sure to thrill the whole family. Prices range from $65.00 per child to $85.00 per adult, with family and concession passes also available.
Urimbirra Wildlife Park
Located just 5 minutes from Victor Harbor, Urimbirra Wildlife Park offer visitors a hands-on experience with native Australian animals. Feed a kangaroo or emu, pat a koala, watch a professional snake handler demonstration or laugh with a kookaburra. You’ll be surprised how easy it is to get carried away and forget about time with over 400 Australian native animals throughout the wetlands of Urimbirra Wildlife Park to see.
The park offers a number of activities daily, so be sure to check their website for times and fares. Entry into the Park costs $7.00 for children and $14.00 for adults. You can also purchase pellets to feed the animals for only $1.00 a bag.
